Violence and the Urban Child: What Can We Do?

The University of Baltimore Sayra and Neil Meyerhoff Center for Families, Children and the Courts will host it's Seventh Annual Urban Child Symposium on Wednesday, April 1, 2015. This year’s symposium -- "Violence and the Urban Child: What Can We Do?” -- seeks to break the pattern of traumatized youth committing crime as adults. Panelists and audience members will suggest programs and approaches that can effectively minimize children's exposure to and commission of violence. This year's symposium features presentations by keynote speakers Nicholas Turner, President and Director, Vera Institute of Justice, as well as Vincent Schiraldi, Senior Adviser, Mayor's Office of Criminal Justice, New York City.
The first panel, “Violence and the System's Response,” outlines the challenges the criminal and juvenile justice systems face in responding to violence and the urban child. Panelists will discuss ways in which agencies, individuals and organizations can work with urban children and their families to break the cycle through enhanced prevention, intervention and accountability efforts.

The second panel, “Violence and the Community - A Roundtable Discussion,” will have a focus on ways in which the community can provide support to children who have been victims and/or perpetrators of violence. Panelists will make special note of ways in which the community can meet the emotional, social and physical needs of children involved in violence.
