Panel Two Materials
.The Sayra and Neil Meyerhoff Center for Families, Children and the Courts hosted the 6th annual Urban Child Symposium on Thursday, April 3, 2014. This year’s symposium, "Social Media and the Urban Child: The Effects of the Digital Age,” addressed the problems social media pose for urban children and the effects of social media on individuals, families and communities.
The symposium featured a presentation by keynote speaker Melody Barnes, Vice Provost for Global Student Leadership Initiatives and Senior Fellow, Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, New York University; Chair, Forum for Community Solutions, Aspen Institute; Assistant to the President and Director, White House Domestic Policy Council (2009-12).
The first panel, “The Social Media Landscape and Its Effects on Individuals, Families, and Communities,” investigated both the positive and negative effects of social media on urban children and their surrounding families and communities.

The second panel, “The Law, Social Media and the Urban Child,” explored the challenges faced by policymakers, lawyers and the law enforcement community in confronting the relationship between social media and the law.

The third panel, “Pros and Cons – Parents and Children,” gave a select group of educators, parents and children the opportunity to discuss the pros and cons of social media based on their personal experiences.
