Who is my advisor?
The Director of Law Student Support is the main academic advisor; however, anyone in Student Affairs can answer general advising questions.

How do I register for classes?
Students are auto-enrolled for classes in the first year at UBalt Law. When you begin to select courses, you will register for classes in your student center on MyUB. Academic Affairs releases registration instructions as well as suggested classes prior to the registration period each semester. Additionally, Student Affairs schedules a 1L advising presentation to provide registration information and instructions. Lastly, Student Affairs has “advising-on-the-go” sessions in the lobby of the law building.

What classes are required for graduation?
Required courses are listed in the Student Handbook. Additionally, you may find required -- and other recommended -- courses in the Course Planning Guide. We recommend that you meet with the Director of Law Student Support with specific questions.

How many credits can I take each semester?
Part-time students may take a maximum of 12 credits every semester. Full-time students may take a maximum of 16 credits every semester.

How can I take more than the maximum number of credits?
You may seek permission for a one credit overload once in your law school career. You will need to meet with the Director of Law Student Support before your request will be approved.

I have to repeat a course, what’s next?
You will receive an email from the Assistant Dean for Enrollment and Academic Planning with instructions on how to proceed. We recommend that you also meet with the Director of Law Student Support to discuss your remaining courses. We also recommend that you meet with the Director of Academic Support to discuss strategies to improve your legal writing and analysis skills.

I have to take Rules & Reasoning, will I still graduate on time?
Yes, you will still graduate on time. Most students will earn between 27 and 39 units of elective course credits in order to reach 87 total credits, which gives you room to add this class without a delay in academic progress. We recommend that you meet with the Director of Law Student Support to discuss your remaining courses.

How can I request a letter of academic standing?

Should I work while attending law school?
Full-time law students in their first year are encouraged to focus their time and attention on their academics. The part-time evening program is specifically designed with the working adult in mind. We advise students who want or need to work, especially if you want or need to work full-time, to choose the evening program.
